The Phoenix Gang has a hideout in the basement of a ruin in southern Varrock, and a weapons storage room on the first floor of a small building in the south-east sector of the town. The desert phoenix may be found along the west bank of the River Elid in the Kharidian Desert, north of the bridge to the Dominion Tower in the north-eastern part of the desert.
The shaded blue area in the centre of this map indicates the walking area of the desert phoenix. To collect more than one phoenix feather you must complete The Golem quest. Head back to the Phoenix Gang hideout, and climb up the ladder in the building to the east. The Weaponsmaster will let you in, and you may pick up two Phoenix crossbows.
When you have both of them, go back to Katrine, and she will make you a member of the Black Arm Gang. With 6 x more quests as a member, you have complete access to the multitude stories, adventures and personalities of RuneScape. Morytania Burgh de Rott. Gathering sinew or tree roots for the Crossbow String is similar, though some enemies like the New Varrock Guard Captain drop them. Enemy drops can also yield powerful crossbows. However, these three have slimmer drop chances, making Commander Zilyana the best option. Since RuneScape is a game full of grinding, you should know that before you can make a crossbow, you need to have some experience and levels in various skill areas.
Other than the Fletching skill, you also need to have higher Smithing and Mining skills. Fletching is trained by creating bowstrings, arrows, bolts, bows, and crossbows. The more you make, the sooner you level up in Fletching. Smithing and Mining are trained by constantly mining ores and forging objects such as bars and swords, among many other metal objects. You also need to have the tools of the trades as well. Everyone in RuneScape already has a knife to fletch and craft with.
However, you need pickaxes and chisels if you want to mine and make bolt tips, respectively. These bolts can be used in Steel Crossbows and higher for maximum damage, but weaker crossbows will apply a damage cap, lowering their efficiency.
Different bolts require different ores, though all of them require Feathers. With this many different requirements, you should have an abundant supply of ore and more to be able to create them. You can also enchant other bolts before combining them with other materials to yield a new bolt type. Crossbows are good weapons, but not for the reason you expect — some enemies are weaker to bolts than arrows.
