Prefer maximum performance locks the GPU into a higher voltage and higher clock state. What do you mean 6V line? PSUs typically have 3. If you're getting a 6V reading on any of those, that's a big problem. Sorry, but that is not correct. My Geforce , on "prefer max perf", downclocks itself as usual to MHz with occasional spikes a bit higher when it's idle or when I just use 2D mode desktop, internet.
I think "prefer max perf" changes the way the different "power states" are managed when the card uses 3D. Since, I have reverted to Thanks for the answer, that explains a lot. Apparently the card does also draw more power then which I guess could explain the odd behavior I'm seeing. And sorry about the confusion, by the 6V line I meant the 6-pin 12V connector, not sure why I put the 'V' in there.
I don't have a multimeter so I haven't measured the actual readings. Pierre said: Sorry, but that is not correct. If you set it in the 'global' options, its 3D clocks ALL the time. Even when idle on the desktop. If you set it on a per application basis, it only applies when that application is running. For example, A game may no longer downclock the GPU during a pre-rendered cut scene.
As the OP has not specified which method he is using, I have assumed its the Global option. I don't even use application profiles. I'm using the global setting as well, like said otherwise I get TDRs when idling on the desktop. However, on Maximum Performance my Titan doesn't downclock anymore when it's idling, it's Mhz while the maximum at boost is Mhz factory clocks so it's a bit weird how all this works.
Wrong again I have my gpu set to max performance in global and when it idle on desktop it drops clock. Max performance is for when there load on the card it will run 3d clocks speeds barring boost speeds. That shouldn't happen. Yep, looks odd to me too that it would downclock but only so little. Might be related to Windows 8. Fresh Windows install too, with no own tweaks whatsoever. Both modes deliver the same performance and power.
They also regulate the voltage, clock speeds, and core of your GPU. The difference between these modes will be discussed shortly.
