Smart motorways are a technology driven approach to tackling the most congested parts of the motorway network, improving journey reliability by controlling the flow and speed of traffic. They also support the economy by providing much-needed capacity on the busiest motorways, while maintaining safety for road users and those who work on the roads.
The M62 motorway is a strategic route for local, regional and international traffic and plays a major role as a cross-country artery between the north-west, Yorkshire and Humberside. This section of the M62 carries in excess of , vehicles per day.
The M62 carries high volumes of heavy goods and other vehicles. Congestion and unreliable journey times are currently experienced at busy periods and traffic is predicted to grow. The M62 project will relieve congestion and smooth the flow of traffic, improving journey times as well as improving the current unpredictability of journey times along this stretch of the motorway.

Latest updates 29 January M1 junctions bridge waterproofing - August to September On Friday 6 August we will start work to re-waterproof two bridges just south of M1 junction M1 near junction 33 - August What are we doing and when? This work will start on Monday 2 August and is expected to finish on Friday 13 August.
We will be working overnight from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday. Closures, restrictions and diversions To carry out this work safely, we need to close the M62 between junction 34 and junction 35 and divert traffic onto nearby routes. A diversion will be in place for all vehicles using the A19, A63, A and A Closures, restrictions, and diversions To carry out this work safely, we will close the M1 overnight in one direction on the weekends Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 8pm and 6am. A fully signed diversion will be in place with traffic diverted on the A, A and A Phase one This phase will require full overnight closures of the M1 junction 33 southbound entry slip-road.
Phase two During this phase, we will fully close the M1 southbound carriageway overnight under the junction 33 roundabout. This work is one of a range of schemes we'll be carrying out along the M1 this year.
