Why does soaking seeds help germination




















I had forgotten about the benefits of soaking seed. When I read your article I remembered seeing seeds soaking at my grandparents house. I never did ask why or I would of done it myself throughout the years. Thank you so much for sharing this. So glad! Soaked the next batch and they sprouted so much faster!

I soak my seeds in a mild solution of peroxide and water. Recent scientific studies back up the effectiveness of chemically scarifying seeds by soaking them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Hydrogen peroxide is thought to increase germination rates by breaking down the seed coat, thus allowing the seed to take in more oxygen. My cucumber seeds sprouted in two days. I soaked Bush string beans and planted same day , next day after a warm night they were already up!

What is a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide and water to soak seeds? Should tou use it to water the seeds too?

Any suggestions to speed growthand flowering? Regular water will work. As for proper growth, be sure to provide the right heat, light, water, and fertilize the seedlings after weeks. When my seedlings have a true set of real leaves, I fertilize with an organic granular all-purpose vegetable fertilizer from the store. Thanks for that encouragement about soaking. I have done it with different flower seeds in the past but this year when I got a pack of Chinese cucumber seeds first time I just put them in damp soil and expected them to germinate.

In England this spring we have had cold nights especially, so I have to keep them indoors but even the house gets cold at night. We never plant okra without soaking; it benefits greatly. To easily do this forget the file , place seeds on the grating side of a handheld box cheese shredder and gently roll them side to side. This will gently knick them and allow better soaking.

Thanx for the advice, I will definitely try it. I planted seeds last year Oct, it has still not sprouted. I use the peroxcid trick but I use 1part peroxide to 2parts hot water. Some will sprout in 24hrse!

Make sure you have a good day to plant after the seeds are finished soaking. If you leave them waiting around to plant, they could easily begin to mold or rot. Scarification is a process where the seeds are scraped to remove the outer layer. This will allow the outside of the seed to breakdown faster when soaking.

I knew to soak beets and chard, so last time I planted them at the same time as beans, I soaked the beans too.

I think I got better germination even though you said its not necessary for beans because I often find the the beans rot. I have problems with knowing exactly how much to water.
