These jars come in 4, 8 half pint and 12 ounce varieties. This consists of just two jars, a pint and a half pint. I love the shape of them, but often forgo them for the less expensive jars.

You will often come across other sizes and shapes in thrift and antique stores, but to my knowledge, these are the only ones currently available for purchase new.

Also, during the canning process, the seal is put on the jar first, and the vacuum created by the cooling contents of the jar ideally makes the seal between jar and lid airtight. How long do you boil the lids for canning? Home canning lids with sealing compound must be heated for 10 minutes before using to help lids achieve a vacuum seal.

Which canning jars are best? Best with smooth sides: Anchor Hocking Mason jars. Best with wide mouths: Kerr wide-mouth Mason jars. Best with bail tops: Bormioli Rocco bail top Mason jars. Best with handles: Libbey handled drinking Mason jars. Can you reuse lids for canning? If you're planning on canning, you can reuse your purpose-made glass jars and screw bands, as long as they're in good condition.

The metal snap lids, on the other hand, are made to be used once. Once the gummy, rubbery seal on the lid is heated and cooled, it can't make the same quality of seal again. Why do mason jars say ball? How do you know if a jar is airtight?

If the lid springs up when you release your finger, the lid is unsealed.
